KoAloha KCM-SUS Solid Cedar/Koa Concert Ukulele in hard case - SUS Exclusive! #24-2
We are so excited about these, our first SUS exclusive KoAloha concert ukuleles! It was during conversation with Paul Okami at KoAloha over last summer when I mused about whether they would ever use cedar on a standard range of KoAlohas, as we know they like to use it on Red Labels and Special Issues. He said of course it was possible, so being massive fans of cedar on ukuleles at SUS, I immediately asked him if he would spec and price up a run of them for us.
The price is slightly higher than for a standard KCM-00 for two reasons; this kind of high quality Western red cedar costs a little more on Hawaii, and it has to be braced slightly differently than an all solid koa KoAloha model. Koa is a hardwood, so the normal unit bracing KoAloha use works really well, but cedar being a softwood needs that extra bracing and support. The KCM-SUS still has the KoAloha unit bracing, with a little subtle extra added where it is necessary.
When Alex first played the KCM-SUS, he said it was one of the best concerts he had ever played. It has that KoAloha sound - full, warm and vibrantly loud - but with a really distinct chiming harp like sound, which is just so gorgeous. The low mids and bass are more pronounced than on the koa models, and make the low G tuning sound fabulous. The extra bracing in no way dampens the sustain (which is lengthy), the volume (which is impressive), or the harmonics (which bloom beautifully). It just has such a fruity, rich sound - I love it.
Chapeau, KoAloha! This is a stunning instrument which offers something very different to anything else at this price point. We are so proud!
