Millar GUNSY-T All Solid Spruce/Spalted Maple Tenor Ukulele (SUS EXCLUSIVE) #2

The Millar Gunsy tenor ukulele has been in production for such a long time! We first discussed the possibility of doing some signature SUS models with Millar back in the summer of 2021 but production delays, difficulty finding the right wood and then subsequently accidentally putting the wrong woods on the wrong instruments for the prototypes (you have to laugh!) means that the first instruments are finally here at SUS in all their glory in the Autumn of 2022.

Why Millar, why Gunsy? Good questions, Gunsy has been quietly working away on the workbenches of Southern Ukulele Store for over 10 years. He doesn't appear in as many of our product videos as Alex or Phil but when we do utilise him, you are treated to a gentle player who loves a good minor progression with some 7th chords.

Gunsy has had quite the storied career as a bass guitar player and his ukulele preferences are a good reflection of his style of play. He likes a spruce top because it gives you maximum tone and volume for minimal effort and he chose to pair it up with some select pieces of spalted maple. Maple is an underated ukulele tonewood that gives you lots of mid presence when you strum and a clean, clinical sound when you fingerpick. The subsequent uke is a real treat on the ears and eyes.

Someone out there didn't know they were looking for this uke... the maple used in particular has a look and feel to it where you feel like you are being treated to something special just by holding it!

Why Millar?

Well, Gunsy loves Millars...

'Millar are just great. Really, really great. We get so many deliveries that sometimes things that should stand out get lost in the shuffle but I never feel that way about Millars. Not many people know this but I take all of the photos for our website and one of my favourite brands to photograph are Millars. Its little things about this uke that I love, the feel of the neck, the purple binding which just feels so me!'

The more I learn about ukuleles, the more I feel like Millar are the modern incarnation of a family business like Kamaka. Who wouldn't want a ukulele spec'd up and produced for them by these guys?'
