Millar PHIL-J Solid North American Redwood/Black Walnut JUMBO Tenor Ukulele #1

The Millar Phil tenor ukulele has been in production for such a long time! We began talks about this ukulele series in 2021 but had to overcome many hurdles to bring them to you. 

There were production delays, difficulty finding the right wood and then subsequently accidentally putting the wrong woods on the wrong instruments for the prototypes! Now, the first Millar tenors are finally here at SUS in all their glory in the autumn of 2022. This particular incarnation is a special run of jumbo tenors with twin wooden pickguards 

Phil has been a staple of the ukulele scene with his work here at the shop for over 5 years. He doesn't appear in as many of our product videos as Alex but when he does he has a tendency to steal the show with a really soft, bluesy ukulele style. He has forged quite the path as a teacher of blues ukulele too and has built his own ukulele previously under the guidance of Pete Howlett!

'I believe that Millar offer the most cost friendly custom shop style instrument out there. There is literally nothing not to love about the work Millar do whether it's the feel of the necks which have a nice shallow carve to them, the quality of the woods which are always exemplary compared to similarly priced ukes, or just the fact that Millar is a family business with each uke being team built by a close knit family in Taiwan. I consider myself the ultimate family man and I bond with Millars on every level... Knowing they would find the tonewoods I love from a high end ukulele but produce something that players looking to spend under £1000 was a no brainer for me'.

Redwood is a bit like a supercharged cedar. It has all the warmth, openess and folkness of cedar but the old growth wood look that you only see in central Californian and southern Oregon now. Textured looks and sounds with clear highs but never piercing like other bright top woods.

The back and sides are made from American black walnut which looks almost like rosewood with hues of purples and browns in the wood. Sound wise, it makes for a direct and confident ukulele with lots of bass but more importantly great projection. Perfect for blues, soul or the jazz style that Phil likes to play.

Sadly, a teeny tiny ding in the edge of one of the pickguards has meant that we have offered this instrument in B-stock condition. The price reflects this. Marks are pictured.
