Ohana USA DT-PMT Solid Port Orford Cedar & Oregon Myrtle B+Sides Tenor Ukulele w/Hard Case #190314p
Ohana are cooking these days with a Long Beach, Californian Custom shop that is quietly producing some of the best Ukuleles in the world.
We met head luthier Brad back in January and comissioned half a dozen ukuleles to be produced for us throughout 2024/2025. One of these Ukuleles is this absolutely phenomenal DT-PMT.
We love local or regional wood combinations... it's refreshing to see something that isn't made of Koa/Mahogany/Mango etc but instead utilises the beautiful tonewoods on the lesser trodden path. This Ukulele has a solid Port Orford Cedar top and Oregon Myrtle Back and sides. Both native US woods, on a US made instrument producing a sound that feels more American Folk than Hawaiian soul.
Port Orford Cedar has some noteworthy tonal differences to traditional Western Red Cedar. It is open and very reflective but also stiffer like Sitka Spruce - it is extremely versatile for a fingerpicker and looks distinctive with its amber colour. It's basically the US version of the Australian wood Eucalyptus.
The back and sides are made of Oregon Myrtle. First popularised in the mid 1990's by Kim Breedlove; Myrtle combines many of the tonal characteristics of Rosewood, Mahogany and Maple. It has a rich bass, warm midrange and very clear confident treble tones. It lacks the dark, regal look of something like Rosewood but it has a striking, windswept look to the grain.
This particular Ukulele has a feeling about it... it makes you want to say it plays itself. The sustain is piano like and although I wouldn't say it is piercingly loud like a KoAloha or an L.Luthier; it has plenty of volume and projection. It makes everything sound sharp and crisp and doesn't muddy the bass frequencies at all.
