This fabulous Martin 1k soprano ukulele is in excellent condition for its age. We can date it accurately to the 1920s, because it was during this period that Martin used to make unbranded headstocks for shops to brand with their own logo.

This ukulele has a headstock badge that reads "Deans Music House, Springfied Massachussetts". It was fitted originally with wooden pegs typical of the 20s Martins - these are included with the uke, but have been replaced with more modern and functional Waverley friction pegs, which are small, light and a joy to use.

There is one tiny hairline crack visible on the back, which does not go all the way through the wood. If you use a humidifier when the uke is in the case, this will not necessarily worsen at all. Most Martins of this age have been cracked and cleated in sometimes more than one place; this one is about as clean as I have ever seen.

This little beauty shares all of the vitality that the old Martins have in spades; they made ukuleles properly back then, and it really shows. The sound is so vibrant and clean. It is just a lovely, lovely thing.
