If there was an award for most unique instrument of 2019 - this absolute gem would be right up there at the top of the list of nominees!!

Where to begin? Phil Davidson is one of the premier fretted instrument makers in the UK with a storied career specialising in Mandolins - his work with the music brand Ashbury has yielded some amazing instruments but his bespoke custom work is where he has really shined. With the introductions out the way - lets' talk about the instrument you can't stop looking at before you.

I suppose to list all of the woods would be a good start -

The Top is a 50/50 mixture of Old English Ancient Yew (from a Church near Bath) and Orford Cedar creating a very classical guitar like sound with a flamenco-ish release on single notes.

The back is another unique combination of London Plane wood and Spalted Beech - This most reminds me of some romantic period instruments like Lutes and is warm and mellow - a nice contrast to the woods on the top.

The sides on this Ukulele are so easy to overlook with so many other gorgeous wood combinations taking centre stage but you are looking at a mixture of Premium Hawaiian Koa on the side with the soundhole and Quilted Maple on the underside. It's impossible for me to even guess which of these woods make up the bulk of the tone in this instrument - if ever there was a patchwork instrument to be had and to spend the rest of your days admiring and analysing - it's this puzzling-pineapple-patchwork pickle of a Uke right here.

Finally (for this part of the listing), the neck is made up of a mix of Old Cherry wood from Westonbirt Arboretum and North American Black Walnut

The Nut and Saddle of this instrument are Purple heart which I personally absolutely adore - I wish more people would manufacture instruments with wooden nuts and saddles, aesthetically it just adds so much, even on such a busy instrument like this.

Now what about that gorgeous fingerboard and bridge (and headplate)? Well this incredibly complex looking and figured wood is actually Spalted Boxwood and the original owner of this Ukulele loved it so much that he comissioned a Banjo Ukulele with more of this wood that you may still see available elsewhere on our site.

The back of the headstock is Paua-Rosa which is a very dark, almost rosewood like wood and brings the darker tones in the colour chart to this instrument. Other deluxe appointments include tortoishell binding painstakingly inserted all the way up to the dip in the neck where it begins to reach the soundhole! Did you notice the abalone shell inlays done in little heart shapes all the way up the fingerboard? Oh yeh - I forgot to mention this instrument has twin heart shaped soundholes - one on the front and one you can admire as you look down and play it. Both of these are bound in abalone too!

Phil also included a mother of Pearl Phil Davidson logo - just to give the instrument a little bit of bling.
